Hertha Berlin can take the next step towards a new stadium. The Berlin football club can submit a preliminary construction inquiry for a new build at the Jesse-Owens-Allee site following a recommendation from the 'Football Stadium in the Olympiapark' expert commission.
The specialist magazine Kicker reported this week. The commission has approved the site south of the Maifeld in the Olympiapark for a potential new stadium. It recommended that Hertha BSC submit the formal pre-application to the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office. This procedure is intended to review building and planning law requirements and clarify open questions for the later building application.
Submitting a preliminary construction inquiry is an important administrative milestone, but not yet a final building permit. It allows the club and authorities to assess the fundamental feasibility of the project under existing regulations. Since autumn 2024, a Senate-internal review group has already held eight meetings to examine infrastructure aspects of a new stadium build.
The review covered transport links, building law requirements, emissions control, environmental law, heritage protection, impacts on Olympic Stadium operations, integration into the Olympiapark, and issues related to tendering and hereditary leasehold. Sports Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) welcomed the commission's recommendation. She said: "With the recommendation of the expert commission, the club can take a next step for the construction of the stadium."
The proposed site is located at Jesse-Owens-Allee, south of the Maifeld in Berlin's Olympiapark. This location was selected after intensive examination by the expert commission. Plans for a dedicated football stadium for Hertha BSC have existed for about ten years. Earlier projections even anticipated a possible completion by summer 2025, which did not materialize.
Iris Spranger emphasized the careful handling of the historic grounds. She stated: "the result also shows how carefully we are dealing with the Olympiapark, and how it can succeed in finding a balance between development and preservation." The club currently plays in the 2. Bundesliga and hosts its home matches at the Olympic Stadium, which was designed for athletics events and features a large running track.
While stadium planning progresses, the sporting focus remains on the ongoing season in the 2. Bundesliga. The team under coach Michael Köllner is currently in mid-table. The next sporting challenge is the away match at 1. FC Nürnberg this coming Saturday.
