Hertha Berlin tops the 2. Bundesliga table after securing four consecutive league wins, a feat not achieved since 2013. Managing director Peter Görlich told Bild Sport that despite the positive run, the club remains far from reaching its full potential.
Görlich stated that Hertha Berlin is no longer in a life-threatening condition but is still not healed. „The club is no longer in a life-threatening state, but also not yet healed“, said the 59-year-old executive. He warned against stopping to „turn over every stone“ and stressed the need to build values, generate transfer revenues, and avoid saving themselves to death. Also, he insisted that the Hertha BSC system must consolidate collectively, not only in one area.
Görlich explained that the club has formulated a clear target image of where it wants to go, and that it is currently at only 40 percent of that vision. „We have formulated a target image of where we want to go. We are currently at 40 percent“, he said. Despite a leaner squad following 16 departures and only four new signings, player responsibility has increased, creating psychological security. „Everyone notices they are needed, and still feels they cannot leave anything out, because otherwise someone else comes in“, Görlich added.
According to Görlich, the team structure has been reorganized, and players have found a space they previously lacked. He praised the squad for having a clear plan and considerable courage. Head coach Stefan Leitl, aged 49 and under contract until 30 June 2027, will have his future discussed after the first half of the season, with talks set for the second half. Görlich promised no „rosy landscapes“, but emphasized that Hertha Berlin possesses unique opportunities if it completes its homework, strategically positions itself, and establishes a sustainable performance culture.
Görlich admitted that reality had been worse than expected in some places and remains such that the club „cannot draw from full reserves“. These opportunities, he stressed, must be created in reality, they cannot simply be wished for or hoped for. Hertha Berlin is preparing for its upcoming match, which, according to our fixtures page, is scheduled for this coming Saturday against a direct promotion rival.
