Hertha Berlin have completed their first summer signing with the loan of Oluwaseun Adewumi. The 21-year-old attacker joins from English club Burnley for the entire season, the club announced on Wednesday. Hertha succeeded in a competition with clubs from Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland.
The Berlin side are paying a six-figure loan fee for Adewumi, but this fee will decrease the more playing time the player receives. The club used a similar model in the signing of Farid Alfa-Ruprecht from Bayer Leverkusen. The deal does not include an option to buy. Adewumi, who has already played 124 professional games in four countries, is expected to be integrated into the squad immediately.
Oluwaseun Adewumi brings versatile experience. During his previous loan at Cercle Brugge he was often used as a striker. Before that, he played mostly as an attacking midfielder for Dundee FC in Scotland and on the wings for Floridsdorfer AC in Austria. His greatest asset is his tremendous speed. At Cercle Brugge he was clocked at a top speed of 37.9 km/h.
At Hertha Berlin he can be deployed in several attacking positions. Manager Stefan Leitl now has another option for the forward line. The current lineup featuring players like Fabian Reese and Haris Tabakovic can be seen on our squad page. Adewumi's ability to use both feet and his quick decision-making suit the team's style of play.
Sporting director Benjamin Weber, manager Stefan Leitl and coordinator Sami Allagui held early talks with the player. These were decisive for Adewumi's choice. The Belgian club Cercle Brugge, where the attacker last played, held a purchase option. However, their offers were too low, leading Burnley to reject them.
Hertha Berlin seized this opportunity and secured the services of the Austrian U21 international. The club thus prevailed against international competition. Detailed performance data for all players, including speed metrics, is available in our stats.
With Adewumi, Hertha Berlin are strengthening the squad for the upcoming tasks in the 2. Bundesliga. The club is currently in mid-table, which can be tracked on our standings page. The new signing's next chance for an appearance comes this Saturday when Hertha Berlin travel to face SC Paderborn. This match is part of an important phase before the international break.
Adewumi has already made an impact with two substitute goals against Heidenheim and in Braunschweig. After his goals, he immediately sought contact with the fan curve, which could quickly make him a crowd favourite. His contract with Hertha Berlin runs until the end of the 2026/27 season.
