On 22 August at 20:15 in the Munich SAP Garden, SC Magdeburg faced Hertha Berlin in the Supercup. SC Magdeburg won 38-31, ending a 25-year drought that they finally broke in their fourth attempt under coach Bennet Wiegert (44 years). The match turned into a clear power demonstration by the SCM, which dominated the Füchse from the outset.
Early dominance
Within five minutes the SCM had already made three saves by Hertha’s goalkeeper Matej Mandic and scored the first two-goal lead (3-1) with Albin Lagergren. In the first 19 attempts, 17 goals were scored - a sign of the SCM’s offensive coverage. Icelandic playmaker Gisli Kristjansson posted a perfect shooting record: nine goals from nine attempts. He scored at 17:10 after 25 minutes, contributing significantly to the advantage.
Key players and tactics
Mathias Gidsel, who first scored at the 10th minute for 4-5, could not stop Hertha’s comeback. Captain Magnus Saugstrup netted the first eight-goal lead at 38:8, shortly followed by Lagergren from the backcourt to 30-21. New signing Dominik Kuzmanovic in goal performed similarly to his Croatian teammate Mandic, keeping Hertha from approaching more than five goals.
Hertha Berlin in the rear
Hertha Berlin lost key players Dejan Milosavljev (goalkeeper) and Lasse Andersson (backcourt) in the summer. Despite these losses, the team was not poor, but the SCM was the better side in decisive moments. The Berliners had to fight hard for each goal, while Magdeburg always found the right solution in positional attack.
Outlook
